Video from ConocoPhillips’ Town Hall meeting on Colombia’s potential first fracking project
Community groups face down corporate manipulation tactics as fracking looms in San Martín Cesar
In 2015, ConocoPhillips and CNE Oil & Gas (Canacol Energy) obtained contracts for the exploration and production of unconventional fossil fuels (fracking) in the municipality of San Martín, César, Colombia. Even though the exploration phase began without an environmental license for unconventionals, the project is currently ongoing.
ConocoPhillips has been carrying out town hall meetings in the affected communities. One of these meetings took place on September 27th, 2017 in the town of San Martín. In the meeting, it was obvious that the company was trying to manipulate locals with false arguments about fracking. Local organizations in San Martín, led by the Corporation in Defense of Water, Territory and Ecosystems (CORDATEC), have been resisting this project, and have faced state repression.
